Part Four

We all took a few hours out from the busy Form schedule last week to gather together for a creative social - to share things which get our creative juices flowing, or which for one reason or another, have inspired us lately.

4th up in this series is from Form partner: Paula Benson.

1/ Avios advert (the making of).
I hope this is real and not just something made to look
authentic for the good of a brand. If it is real, I love it! - A bunch of people trying in earnest to make all sorts of objects fly – a lawnmower, a washing machine and even a shopping basket (the mini ghetto-blaster gets it in the river.) I just love that people do such things and there is something poetic about seeing an everyday object turned into a gently gliding thing of beauty. Its also just a bit silly. And I like that someone was intelligent enough to see fit to turn someone's passion into an advert for Avios – the air miles rewards programme. The music in the advert itself is stunning too. Apparently it’s ‘Underwaters’ by Leila (but don’t blast me down in flames if I’m wrong).

The making of is great to watch first. See it here >

And then the final advert. See it here >

2/ A legend in our own living rooms: Terence Conran.
I spoke about this in our creative social but I've aready written a dedicated blog entry on this Sir of all things design and restaurants! See blog here >

4/ And last but not least, i was flicking through the TV channels the other night and came across this chap trying to sell a tacky framed print on Bid Tv. His commentry was something to behold and had me transfixed in disbelief! Call me a snob, but this is classic.... I urge you to feel the love here >

2nd up in this series is from Form designer Chris Moore:

1. Director Keith Hopkin had the simple but original idea to film 13 dogs with their heads out of the car window. The combination of slow motion filming and an excellent choice of music, makes it a very funny video and well worth a watch.

Sun, 12 Feb 2012 04:07:00 -0800 Form blog post by Paula: A legend in our own front rooms - Terence Conran http://formblog.posterous.com/form-blog-post-by-paula-a-legend-in-our-own-f http://formblog.posterous.com/form-blog-post-by-paula-a-legend-in-our-own-f

I hadn’t truly logged what an impact furniture designer and restaurateur Terence Conran had made on my life until visiting the current exhibition ‘How Way We Live Now’, a celebration marking Conran’s 80th birthday at Design Museum, London.

I was a long term fan of Habitat (founded by Conran in 1964) since my teenage years of the the early 80s when a trip to ‘town’ (Cheltenham) wasn’t complete without a visit to this then emporium of homeware. You have to remember nothing much like this existed on the provincial high street back then. I loved the sense of style and design which pervaded the shop -  through the furniture, the cookware and the fabulous fabrics. Not to mentioned the catalogues!

I shrieked out loud at the exhibition when I saw a catalogue from 1986 I had totally forgotton about, but seeing it framed on the wall was like bumping into an old friend. I suddenly realised how early Habitiat catalogues had fueled my life long passion for interiors books and magazines. I would buy them and pour over the contents, many years before I could ever afford my own home, and it’s probably those catalogues which partly made me want to be a graphic designer. The idea of setting out completely styled rooms, not only in the catalogues but in the shops themselves was a pretty new concept and has also influenced me as an art director in creating mini worlds.

And then fast forwarding to the late 80s/early 90s, once I’d graduated from St Martins and been working as a graphic designer for a few years, I now also realise what an impact all those Conran restaurants had on the London dining-out experience. No friend’s birthday was complete without a night of good food and stylish interiors at Pont de La Tour, Chop House, Quaglinos, or Bibendum. Just as me and my friends started to earn some money, we were able to experience ‘posh’ restaurants which weren’t stuffy - and we felt grown up and a little bit like proper foodies.
Img_1690
Img_1691

Through his individual sense of style and entrepreneurialism, Conran changed many things from the living room to the restaurant, and the exhibition documents this in a calm, considered and well-paced way.

Exhibition Open until 4 March

We were asked to create a brand identity for this charity, founded by key members of the events industry to help and maintain a long term relationship with the slum community of Namuwongo in Uganda.

We felt the name and logo needed to communicate the uniting of two very different communities to create positive change - this concept is reflected in the icon and identity system through interlocking lines and the earthy yet bright colour palette are fresh and positive. The overall feel of the communications is simple and direct with bold use of photography to communicate what matters most - the people this campaign will help the most.

William Reed commissioned us to create a new logo and brand identity for The Restaurant Show – the dedicated trade exhibition for the restaurant and food service industry.

The brief: Strengthen the position of the event and reflect the key offer and messages, by creating a more sophisticated identity to work across all print and digital communications (including the design of an engaging sales brochure, advertising and direct mail pieces).

Trs_cover

Our solution: The typographic logo is clean and sophisticated, with an identifiable ‘plate icon’ used as the ‘O’. We commissioned and art directed a ‘statement’ visual to define the campaign based on a beautiful, seductive photographic ‘sculpture’ comprised of items on display at the show. The colour palette consists of deep, muted gradient fades. The typography is clean, uncluttered, with a distinct information hierarchy.

After creating the brand identity for the SO Group (major suppliers to the events & exhibition industry) we were commissioned to design and manage the build of a CMS website to help them stand out in their industry.

Our brief was to create an engaging and eye-catching site, but most importantly - simple - with minimum text.

Our solution was to create a homepage which delivers most of the content in video format - each box represents a subbrand, which enlarges to play a video - containing the equivalent information of an entire website - in the form of upbeat interviews and visuals. Much of the other content is drawn from Facebook and Twitter feeds and is therefore always current and fresh.

The customised Wistia video platform (with fully customised player designed by us and with thanks to the talents of our technical partners webstars) allows our client to collect stats on how many videos are watched and for exactly how long so we ensure maximum engagement with the user.

Fri, 13 Jan 2012 09:11:00 -0800 Discovery Max new brand identity by Form launched this week http://formblog.posterous.com/discovery-max-new-brand-identity-by-form-laun http://formblog.posterous.com/discovery-max-new-brand-identity-by-form-laun

Dmax_01

Discovery Networks International commissioned us to create a logo and full off-air identity system for their new free-to-air channel ‘Discovery MAX’ launched in Spain.

We have created all versions of the logo (for use across a multitude of materials), a comprehensive identity system and styleguide which covers the design of print and outdoor advertising, event banners, presentation templates, stationery and merchandise. The system was designed to work with the on-air identity developed by Discovery’s creative team in London.

Dmax_02

We felt the brand identity needed a sense of dynamism, yet link to the overall Discovery Network’s identity. We opted for a simple aesthetic with gravitas - a new channel identity needs to look instantly reliable.

A key part of the identity are large, impactful images (sourced from the programmes themselves) which communicate energy and adventure, as well as identifiable personalities which have immediate connection with the viewer.

Dmax_05

A key identifier of the logo, and overall visual language is a dynamic ‘upwards’ angle, applying to imagery and all graphic panels.

A colour gradient system is also a key part of the identity.

The primary vivid blue fade colourway is reminiscent of the globe, sea, nature.

Secondary palettes exist in red, yellow and green.

Dmax_03

“We are very happy with the results of the Discovery Max identity which fits and exceeds the demands of a challenging brief. It has been great working with Form. They are a very creative team, highly professional, and always responsive. I also found them open to collaboration and great on delivery.”

Federico Gaggio - VP, Executive Creative Director Discovery Networks Western Europe

We enjoyed a jolly spiffing day out last Friday for our Form Christmas party.
Soho was experiencing a complete power cut, so Christmas lunch in Kettners in the dark with candles was fun and intimate and the Form Christmas quiz kept us fully occupied between courses and cocktails.

ROCK!

Then the history of the London music scene came alive when we hired a rock expert from London Walks to give us a Rock n Roll tour of the west-end. From Bill Hayley at the Dominion to the original offices of Northern Songs, and the original Swinging 60’s clubs like The Flamingo and the Ad Lib to the “birthplace” of Led Zeppelin c/o the original Marquee club we were suitably wowed.
We went for a drinkette in the Ship (where music roadies used to hang out in the 60s and 70s waiting for music jobs to come up) and weirdly, we bumped into Rick Mayall. Followed by more in the Pheonix Club in Charing Cross Road where the results of the quiz were announced... Congratulations Mr Paul West! ('fix' i hear you cry..., but alas,
'tis true).

POP!

Then a hop skip and jump to Wembley to see The Saturdays who we have been working with this year. They were pretty darn good and a very entertaining Christmas gig was had by all, followed by a back stage party and a mission to say Hello to all 5 girls from the band and carry on the festivities.

With next year being the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee we asked some key players how the events industry will harness the feel good factor from these 2 benchmark events...

Rachel Quigley, Event Director - William Reed Business Media:

“I saw the anticipation and celebration play out in Sydney in 2000 and look forward to experiencing London’s fervour, events and showcase next year. The scale and calibre of the Olympic experience is unlike any other and businesses across the commercial spectrum, through events or otherwise, have so much to gain by approaching 2012 prepared, adaptable and ready to join the nationwide festivities.”
